A Lost Coin or a Treasure Trove!

Today as I was waiting on the Lord, He showed me a picture of a lost coin. This was a very special and valuable coin and the owner was frantically trying to find it and have it safe again in his possession. This made me think about people who go scavenging up and down the beaches all day long searching for some hidden valuable items, especially coins. You see them with metal detectors that can accurately detect objects buried in the sand and out of view. All sorts of things can be left buried there for quite some time and so for some people this is quite a serious business and they are willing to invest the time necessary to find something of great value.
I thought again about how much value is placed on gold and silver coins or precious gems like rubies, diamonds and pearls. They are so beautiful and lovely to wear as part of a necklace, or braclet, or in earrings or on engagement rings of course. Some people will pay a large sum of money to acquire such items as well as the possession of valuable gold and silver coins that can increase in value over time. They store them away out of the view of others but some of these objects are placed in exquisite treasure boxes and put on show for others to see.
But what is God saying through all this? I believe the Lord wants to bless us with good things, but He also looks at our hearts to see where our true motives lie in being able to correctly use the blessings He bestows upon us for the benefit of others and not just ourselves. Some people have actually been asked by the Lord to give up all their earthly possessions and give what they have to the poor. I believe this is a very special calling and that in being obedient this way, they will be richly rewarded for their obedience. On the other hand, others have been given stewardship of great wealth which can be used for the Kingdom of God and impact society and the community around them. Again, this appears to be a contradiction, but both hold true in God’s Word. The treasure that we seek must be for Him and for His Kingdom.
There was a widow who will always be remembered for her great sacrifice as she gave all she had, the widows mite. And yet there was the rich young man who wanted to please God and told Jesus that he kept all God’s Commandments. But he was challenged by Jesus to sell all his possessions and then he would have treasure in Heaven. He went away sorrowful because he couldn’t part with his riches. Jesus says, “Come follow Me”. That may mean leaving behind those things that have been most important in our lives up to this present time. It might also mean that big changes will also have to be made, also.
Are we willing to give everything we have, whether it be our wealth, our resources, our time and talents, for Him? We are His treasure whom He loves so much. Do we Love and esteem Him with the same kind of Love and devotion that He has for each one of us? He is preparing a mansion in Heaven for each one of us. Each of these dwelling places is so unique and different and full of gold and precious stones of all descriptions. The very best has been laid up in Heaven for those who love him. What have we prepared in our hearts and in our lives for Him? What have we done with the time allotted to us on this Earth in service to Him? It is certainly something to think about. We want to hear Him say on that final day, “Well done, good and faithful servant!”
Or suppose a woman has 10 silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the Angels of God over one sinner who repents.
Luke 15:8-10 (NIV)
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:21 (NIV)
The Kingdom of Heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then to his joy went and sold all he had and bought that fired. Again the Kingdom of God is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
Matthew 13:44-46 (NIV)
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs on your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Luke 12:6-7 (ESV)
Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.
Philippians 3:8 (ESV)
And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all you need, you will abound in every good work.
2 Corinthians 9:8 (NIV)
